Google Expands Gemini Visual Refresh and File Tools to Android Devices

Google is rolling out a redesigned Gemini overlay and new file management tools to Android devices, bringing sparkling visual effects and enhanced in-chat editing features to users worldwide following an initial rollout on Pixel 11 hardware.

The artificial intelligence assistant on Android is receiving a notable visual refresh alongside practical productivity additions. Google rolled out a small visual change to the assistant on non-Pixel devices while simultaneously upgrading how the application handles file management and document creation.

Google Applies Neural Expressive Design to Gemini Overlay

The most immediately visible change arrives the moment a user activates the assistant over another application. Google is applying its Neural Expressive design language to the interface, replacing standard prompt boxes with an ethereal aesthetic characterized by glowing particles and floating dots.

The refreshed Gemini overlay began appearing through an application update on October 29, 2026. Initially restricted to Pixel 11 hardware, the animated treatment extends the updated visual identity to all supported Android devices without requiring a hardware upgrade.

Once the opening animation concludes, the input box features subtle shading along its edges to create a softer, three-dimensional appearance. According to Android Authority, these shaded edges are more pronounced in dark mode while remaining largely indistinguishable from previous iterations in light mode.

Users Can Generate and Edit Files Within Chat

Beyond aesthetics, the update introduces functional enhancements designed to reduce friction during daily workflows. Users can now manipulate documents directly inside the conversation thread without switching to external programs.

According to a company blog post cited by Mashable, users can now generate, preview, and edit files within the chat window. The interface lets individuals open documents in full screen to make modifications or highlight specific text passages to query the assistant directly about the content. Furthermore, the system supports creating and editing presentation slide decks on the fly.

Concurrently, 9to5Google reported a separate interface modification for Gemini Live on Android stable version 17.68. A new plus button added to the left side of the Live interface opens a carousel containing shortcuts for screen sharing, photos, files, and Google Drive, streamlining how context is fed into active conversations.

Server-Side Updates Determine Feature Availability

Because Google distributes application features gradually through server-side updates and package releases, the new animations and file management tools may not appear instantaneously on every device. Users seeking to accelerate the transition can check for a software package via the Google Play Store or force-stop and restart the Google application to trigger the refreshed interface.
