Google Fixes Pixel Crashes and Adds Security to Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2

Google rolled out Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2 for compatible Pixel devices on Tuesday, bringing build number DP11.261002.005 and a substantial changelog addressing system stability, persistent display glitches, and unexpected reboots during daily use. The build also incorporates the October 2026 Android Security patch, an upgrade from the August security patch provided in the previous release.

The latest preview build arrives just over a week after the initial quarterly platform release preview debuted. While beta testers navigating the QPR2 track received a smaller stability update last week focused primarily on screen freezes, the QPR3 branch is receiving a wide-ranging cleanup across 21 specific issues. Google is currently running these two beta tracks in parallel to refine future software performance.

Lock Screen Connectivity Controls Added in Beta 2

Alongside its extensive bug list, the update introduces a security setting designed to prevent unauthorized access to device controls if a phone is lost or misplaced. Located within the display settings, the option is titled Lock Quick Settings connectivity.

Once enabled, adjusting connectivity tiles—such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane mode, and mobile data—requires verification via fingerprint, face unlock, PIN, pattern, or password.

Crash and Reboot Fixes Across Eligible Pixel Hardware

The primary focus of the new firmware centers on resolving disruptive stability flaws. The changelog notes a fix for an issue where devices intermittently crash and reboot during normal use. Testing feedback from the initial preview build also highlighted abrupt shutdowns during video calls. The new software addresses an error where phones unexpectedly powered down during WhatsApp video calls, alongside fixing instances where screen recordings failed when the phone was turned sideways.

Other interface bugs resolved include a persistent text display error on the Internet Quick Settings tile when mobile data is active without Wi-Fi, and a glitch where the media output dialog ignores the system’s monochrome theme when external audio devices are connected. The app drawer no longer closes unexpectedly when a user switches their keyboard language.

Carrier Connectivity and Sensor Drain Addressed

Cellular and network-specific bugs take up a notable portion of the 21-item changelog. Similar network-specific patches address unavailable VoLTE, VoNR, and Wi-Fi calling on the IT&E network, alongside missing Wi-Fi calling support on OXIO.

Power management also receives attention through a fix for high idle battery drain. The issue stemmed from motion sensors remaining active after a user authenticated via Face Unlock or utilized the camera app, causing continuous background power consumption while devices rested in pockets.

Device Eligibility and March 2027 Stable Release Timeline

The new beta build is available for compatible Pixel 6a and newer devices, including the Pixel 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 series, as well as the Pixel Tablet and Fold models. Older hardware such as the original Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro remain excluded from participation, matching the eligibility boundaries established in the first beta release.

Enrolled users can download the package over the air via system update settings, while new testers are encouraged to register through the Android Beta Program. Google advises that users should back up important data before switching from a stable build to the beta. Testing for the QPR3 branch is expected to run for another three to four months, culminating in a stable public rollout projected for the March 2027 Pixel Feature Drop.
