Google Maps Gets Smarter with AI-Powered EV Charging & Anonymous Reviews

Enhancements to the popular navigation app aim to streamline holiday travel and improve user experience with new features powered by Gemini AI.

Google is rolling out a suite of updates to Google Maps designed to make navigating the busy holiday season – and beyond – easier than ever. Unveiled on Wednesday, the new features focus on improving the experience for electric vehicle (EV) owners, enhancing location exploration with Gemini AI, and providing greater privacy for users leaving reviews.

AI Predicts EV Charger Availability

One of the most significant upgrades addresses a common pain point for EV drivers: charger availability. Currently, Google Maps shows the location of EV chargers, including networks like Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America, but doesn’t always indicate whether they’ll be in use upon arrival.

Starting next week, Google Maps will leverage artificial intelligence to predict how many chargers will be available at a given location. The app will analyze historical data to forecast charger availability in real-time, supporting hundreds of thousands of charging stations globally. This information will be displayed directly within Google Maps, and accessible on Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in.

“The chargers might be in use by the time you stop to top up the battery,” a company release stated. “The new feature lets Google use AI to analyze historical data and predict whether your next EV charging stop will have free chargers by the time you get there.”

Gemini AI Powers “Know Before You Go” Insights

Google is integrating its Gemini AI model into Google Maps to provide users with more comprehensive information about places they’re interested in visiting. The new “know before you go” feature extracts insights from reviews and web searches, presenting users with insider tips directly within the app.

These tips can range from the best time to make a reservation to identifying hidden menu items. The feature is currently rolling out on Android and iPhone in the U.S.

Explore Tab Gets a Global Upgrade

The Explore tab within Google Maps is also receiving a significant overhaul. Users can now swipe up on the screen to discover trending and popular activities nearby. The updated tab will also feature curated lists from partners like Viator, Lonely Planet, and OpenTable, as well as quotes from local influencers.

This feature will be available globally this month on both Android and iPhone.

Anonymous Reviews Enhance User Privacy

Google is prioritizing user privacy with updates to its review system. Users can now choose to replace their real name with a nickname and a custom profile picture when leaving a review. For example, a user might choose the nickname “Julia Sweets.”

However, Google emphasized that it will continue to monitor for fake reviews, regardless of the identity displayed publicly. The new review feature is rolling out this month to users on Android, iPhone, and desktop.

These updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to continually improving Google Maps, making it an even more valuable tool for travelers and everyday navigators alike. The integration of AI and a focus on user privacy position Google Maps as a leader in the evolving landscape of digital navigation.
