Google has rolled out a new toggle switch in the Photos app for Android and iOS that allows users to manually switch between “Ask Photos” and classic search.
This update addresses user feedback regarding the AI-powered search experience, providing a quick way to return to traditional keyword-based results when preferred.
New Toggle Simplifies Search Experience
The update, which began reaching users in mid-July 2026, introduces a clear interface change for those who have opted into the Gemini-powered “Ask Photos” feature. Users can now find a toggle at the top of their search results page, allowing them to flip between the AI-driven experience and standard keyword search without navigating through deep settings menus.
According to 9to5google, the company officially announced the rollout with a community post noting: You can now seamlessly integrate both classic and Ask Photos search experiences which makes it easier to shift between them based on your query.
Addressing User Feedback and Latency Concerns
The introduction of the toggle follows a period of friction for some users. The new interface appears to be a direct response to these usability concerns.
Google’s history with the feature has been iterative. As noted by Digital Trends, the company paused the rollout of Ask Photos in June 2025 due to concerns regarding latency and overall quality before reintroducing it with improved handling for simple, straightforward searches.
Technical Rollout on Android and iOS
The feature is currently arriving on both major mobile platforms. Jetstream.blog confirmed that the toggle switch is available in the Google Photos app for Android version 7.83 and iOS version 7.84. For iOS users, this marks a notable specification change; the previous selection setting, which offered a choice between “Classic (Fast)” and Ask (Powerful),
has been replaced by the new, more streamlined ON/OFF toggle.
How the System Determines Search Results
Even with the toggle enabled, the app maintains an automated component. When a user performs a search, the app continues to evaluate which system best fits the request. For simple, single-word queries, the toggle can remain set to “classic search” across multiple attempts.
However, the system is designed to identify when a more complex, natural-language query is required. When a user inputs a question like what’s my license plate?
the app will automatically switch to the AI-powered Ask Photos mode. According to 9to5google, once the app transitions to Ask Photos for a complex prompt, it remains in that mode until the user manually toggles it back to classic search.
For those who have not yet opted into Ask Photos, the toggle still appears in search results, but selecting the AI option will trigger the standard onboarding and opt-in flow, ensuring that users are fully aware of the data-processing implications before enabling the Gemini-integrated tools.
