Google to Replace Gemini Gems With Skills Starting November 17

Google is automatically converting Gemini Gems into conversational skills starting November 17, 2026, for personal accounts, shifting custom AI instructions directly into regular chat windows while dropping several specialized tools and updating age eligibility to 18.

Personal and Enterprise Migration Timelines

Google’s automated retirement of Gemini Gems begins with an in-app notice alerting users that personal accounts will see their custom configurations migrated automatically starting November 17, 2026. On September 27, 2026, 9to5Google reported that a notification appeared on the Gemini Gems management screen stating, Gems will become skills starting Nov 17, 2026. The following day, September 28, TechCrunch also reported, Google is killing off Gemini's Gems in favor of 'skills'. Google has provided a page in the Gemini app help section titled About the transition from Gems to skills, explaining the timing of the transition and what will change. Users can continue operating their existing Gems normally until the individual migration occurs for each setup according to the Gemini app notice.

The transition date differs depending on the account type. The “November 17” date in the news headlines refers to personal accounts; company and school Google accounts will transition later.

Feature Changes and Tool Compatibility

Skills change how users interact with custom instructions by moving away from dedicated side-panel rooms and into main conversational threads. Gems were introduced as custom versions of Gemini. You can give one a role and persistent instructions, such as acting as a writing editor or a study coach, then return to it without rebuilding the prompt each time. Some Gems can also use files for context or be shared with other users. Google introduced skills with Gemini Spark, and they serve the same purpose as Gems at a high level. Both let you give Gemini custom instructions. Gems let you go a step further by setting a default tool, like Create image or Canvas, and adding specific files for context. They can also be shared with other users via links. That said, skills are more easily invoked with a / in the prompt box, while multiple can be used at the same time. This broader access is better than first having to go to Gems in the side panel and scrolling down for My Gems. Google says a Skill can store instructions and preferences for recurring tasks, while Gemini can automatically recognize when a Skill is relevant, or users can explicitly select one. Multiple Skills can also be combined for a single workflow. Supported Gem knowledge files will move automatically, but GitHub files are not currently supported.

While the content (instructions) of the Gems will be carried over, some tools and features will not. It cannot be said that it is just a name change.

Access Requirements and Account Restrictions

A new Google Support page has confirmed that Skills are expanding to users with free accounts. Google is also upgrading Skills with new features, including the ability to import files from Google Drive or Gemini Notebook. It will also let users share the Skills they create with other users. Yesterday, we spotted a new banner in Gemini officially announcing the end of Gemini Gems as we know them. While the banner confirmed that Gems will migrate to Skills starting November 17, it left one major question unanswered: how will users with free accounts access their Gems after the migration? Well, we finally have the answer, and thankfully, Google isn’t hanging free users out to dry. According to a Google Support page that’s now live, the company is opening up Skills access to all Gemini users aged 18 or older. Google has dropped the requirement for Google AI Pro or Ultra, and Skills in Gemini are now available to everyone with a personal Google account. If you have been using Gemini for free and were worried about accessing your Gems once they become Skills, you can now rest easy. You’ll be able to access the Skills page the same way you accessed Gems: just go to Settings > Skills.
