There has apparently been an outbreak of scabies in the Neuchlen barracks in Gossau SG. Two infantry recruits are said to have exhibited symptoms of the skin disease at the beginning of February, as the «Blick» writes. “During the medical examination, the skin disease was confirmed,” says army spokesman Mathias Volken.

20 army members then had to be isolated as a precaution, three of whom were diagnosed with the disease. “Fortunately, the patients who needed medical care had a mild course of the disease,” Volken continued. Everyone has now recovered.

What is scabies?

Scabies, a skin disease, is caused by mites that burrow into the top layer of skin and reproduce. In humans, this leads to severe inflammation. According to Volken, scabies are occasionally diagnosed in the army, usually at the beginning of recruit training and after vacations.

According to the army spokesman, the health of the soldiers is “the highest priority”. The therapy takes place according to the instructions of the military doctor. “The correct cleaning of the patients’ clothes, bedding and sleeping bags is part of the treatment,” Volken continued. Contacts of the patients would also be treated.
