Chris Gotterup secured a dramatic victory at the Phoenix Open, defeating Hideki Matsuyama in a thrilling playoff on February 7, 2026, at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona.
Gotterup, fresh off a win in Hawaii earlier this year, delivered a stunning fourth-round performance of 64, highlighted by five birdies in his final six holes, positioning himself at 16 under par.
The tournament briefly hung in the balance as Matsuyama faced a putt on the 18th green for the win, but a missed opportunity led to a disheartening splash into the water on the extra hole.
Capitalizing on the shift in momentum, Gotterup clinched the win with a clutch, lengthy birdie putt.
“I didn’t think this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday. But here we are,” Gotterup exclaimed after the win.
When asked about the source of his recent success, Gotterup admitted, “God, I don’t know. I really have no idea. I’m just having such a good time playing right now.”
“You make me cry every time. My girlfriend is here. She’s like, you’ve won three times without me here, and she got to see it, and I know everyone at home is watching. Just so awesome.”
Scottie Scheffler also made a significant move on the final day, carding a 64 to finish in a tie for third place. England’s Matt Fitzpatrick concluded the tournament in ninth, three strokes behind the leaders, after recording three birdies in his last five holes.
“I put myself in a tough position after the first round, but three really solid days,” Scheffler said. “Today was another really good round. I’m going to fall a few shots short it looks like, but overall proud of the fight this week and did some good stuff.”
“I played pretty well,” he added. “Only one round where I didn’t have my best stuff. If I get in the house the first day a couple under par, it’s a little different story today. Overall, proud of the way I fought the last three days to give myself a chance.”
