A highly detailed, 40-centimeter tall toy of the RX-78-2 Gundam in its “hyper mode” is slated for release by Bandai Spirits, drawing inspiration from the finale of Gundam GQuuuuuuX and the classic mecha anime Aura Battler Dunbine.
The new collectible taps into the enduring popularity of the Gundam franchise, offering fans a premium rendition of a pivotal moment in Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The toy’s impressive scale and design details are already generating significant buzz within the mecha enthusiast community.
The Rise of ‘Hyper Mode’ in Mecha Anime
The concept of mecha entering a “hyper mode” – a state of dramatic size and power increase – originates from the 1983 anime Aura Battler Dunbine. In that series, pilots experiencing a loss of control over their aura would trigger this transformation in their mecha.
This trope was revisited in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, where the protagonist’s Gundam undergoes a similar expansion during a climactic scene. “Something very similar happens at the end of GQuuuuuuX, when Shuji becomes enraged, and his Gundam grows to an enormous size,” a company release stated.
Design Homage to the ‘Grey Ghost’
The new toy’s color scheme pays tribute to the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam, affectionately known as the “Grey Ghost” among fans of the novel series. This design choice adds another layer of appeal for collectors familiar with the broader Gundam universe.
The toy will be released as part of Bandai Spirits’ Robot Damashii line, known for its high-quality articulation and detail. Given the substantial size – approximately 40cm in height – expectations are high that the joints will be constructed with diecast metal for enhanced durability and stability.
Currently, the toy is available exclusively through Premium Bandai in Japan, priced at 29,700 yen (approximately $191 USD at current exchange rates). One analyst noted that the price point reflects the toy’s scale and the premium materials expected in its construction.
Western Release Anticipated
While initially a Japanese exclusive, industry observers anticipate a release through the US branch of Premium Bandai in the coming year. This would make the collectible accessible to a wider international audience.
Fans can currently stream Gundam GQuuuuuuX worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.
