The XVII International Symposium on Marine Natural Products (MaNaPro) and the XIII European Conference on Marine Natural Products (ECMNP), the most important scientific events in the world on products of marine origin, are held in Granada from September 3 to 8. A meeting in which 300 experts from 24 countries in marine natural products and young scientists will come together to present their latest discoveries and research in this regard.

The PharmaMar Foundation, in its objective of disseminating and supporting scientific research, sponsors these meetings, focused on highlighting the endless opportunities offered by natural products of marine origin thanks to the biodiversity of their ecosystems, offering solutions to various challenges, such as the search for new therapies for human health. At the event, which has been running for 47 years, aspects such as marine ecology, drug discovery and development, as well as artificial intelligence and its application to this field are addressed.

PharmaMar, a leading company in the research, development and commercialization of anticancer drugs of marine origin, will present results of several conjugated antibodies with promising activity in preclinical models, in addition to the results of one of its immunotherapy programs. José María Fernández Sousa-Faro, president of the company and of the PharmaMar Foundation, highlighted how “sponsorship of this event represents fundamental support in the dissemination and dissemination of knowledge and scientific research on products of marine origin that, Today, they are the basis for the development of multiple therapeutic alternatives for a large number of ailments and patients around the world”.

“The future is bright”

José María Fernández Sousa-Faro emphasizes that “more than 75% of the earth’s surface is covered by seas and oceans, with a biodiversity much greater than that of terrestrial ecosystems. Our hypothesis is based on the fact that a lot of research has been done on vertebrate terrestrial organisms but not on marine ones, where there are a large number of invertebrates that have no terrestrial equivalent as they have not been able to adapt to the surface due to the lack of a skeleton. However, these beings draw our attention a lot since they have had to develop different defense mechanisms to survive natural selection, since they do not have an immune system or be able to flee from external threats.

«PharmaMar has the largest collection of marine organisms in the world, more than 350,000 samples on which we study their taxonomy and therapeutic activity»

In this sense, it also highlights that PharmaMar has “the largest collection of marine organisms in the world, more than 350,000 samples on which we study their taxonomy and therapeutic activity. If there is, we try to isolate the compound and do a chemical synthesis process for future medical uses.” Knowledge and experience of a unique company that currently has three drugs approved in the world for the treatment of soft tissue sarcoma, ovarian cancer, small cell lung cancer and multiple myeloma.

«We are sure that the future is promising and for this research is key: since the creation of PharmaMar in 1986, more than one billion euros have been invested in R&D. The approach of dedicating the majority of resources to research has paid off, with a success rate of 37%, since out of 8 compounds in trials we have had 3 approvals, compared to an average of 10% in the pharmaceutical sector”. Regarding the recent creation of the PharmaMar Foundation, its president highlights that its purpose is to improve people’s lives through projects in four key areas: scientific dissemination, the promotion of research, training and the defense of marine biodiversity. “Teamwork and collaboration are present in our DNA and will be essential to advance our objectives with a greater social impact. For this reason, alliances and agreements with other public and private entities, such as research centers, universities and other related organizations, will be a priority in our future projects”.
