They demanded ransom after their cyber attack. Cybercriminals attacked the Grand Palais, which hosts the Olympic Games events in Paris, and around forty museums in France, including the Louvre, this weekend, we learned from a police source on Monday.
During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the investigators targeted a system that allowed “the sub-division of financial data” of the brands located within these sites, this source said. They use the “ransomware” technique, which allows the installation of a virus that “blocks access to the computer or its files to demand the payment of a ransom from the victim to get new ones,” as we recall government website.
Regarding museums, the Grand Palais confirmed that it has been targeted by a cyberattack but does not want to communicate details on this topic. Initially mentioned as being among the targets that could have been hit, the Louvre for its part denied it the evening it was attacked.
An open investigation
Contacted, the French Computer Security Agency (Anssi) confirmed that it had been “alerted to the incident”. This “does not affect the information systems involved in the running of the Olympic and Paralympic Games”, he explained.
According to a police source, we opened an investigation specifically for attacks on automated data processing systems and organized crime. It has been assigned to the Brigade for the fight against cybercrime (BL2C) of the Paris judicial police.
