Despite Moscow’s statements about the withdrawal of troops from the Ukrainian borders, Russia continues to build up military forces in the region. This was announced on the night of Thursday, February 17, by the head of British military intelligence, Jim Hockenhull, and an unnamed senior official in the White House.

“We have not seen evidence that Russia has withdrawn its troops from the borders of Ukraine,” Hockenhall said. On the contrary, according to British intelligence, additional armored vehicles, helicopters are moving towards Ukraine, and a field hospital was also seen. “Russia has the military capacity to carry out an invasion of Ukraine,” Hockenhall said.

The Kremlin deployed up to 7,000 more soldiers to the border with Ukraine

The Kremlin has deployed up to 7,000 more soldiers to the Ukrainian border, according to a US source. The White House spokesman called the statements of the Russian authorities about the withdrawal of part of the troops “false.” He also assured that Russia could launch an operation “at any moment” that would serve as a pretext for invading Ukraine.

“Russia says it wants to find a diplomatic solution, but its actions say otherwise,” the White House said.

The fact that Russia is trying to create a pretext for the invasion of Ukraine with the help of unsubstantiated allegations of “genocide” and “mass graves” in the Donbass was also stated by US State Department spokesman Ned Price.

“Over the past few weeks, we have seen Russian officials and the media throw in numerous stories, any of which could serve as a pretext for an invasion,” Price said, stressing that none of these claims have any truthful basis.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kiev also sees no change in the number of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders. “We see small rotations. Today I would not call these rotations a withdrawal of troops from the Russian Federation,” the head of state said on television.

West fears Russian invasion of Ukraine

In recent months, the West has been recording the creation of a powerful Russian military group in various parts of the Ukrainian border and has announced the threat of invasion. The Kremlin denies military aggression plans.

On February 15, the Russian Ministry of Defense, after a weeks-long period of tension, announced the start of a withdrawal of troops from the Ukrainian border. However, Western countries and NATO say they have not yet seen any signs of a halt in Russian military activity on the border with Ukraine.
