Numbers when buying a home or car, everyone knows that. But in a restaurant? On the Greek island of Hydra in the Saronic Gulf near Athens, interest in the “To Pefkaki” restaurant is evidently high. Because if you want to reserve a table for three people there in the afternoon for the evening, you have to pay a deposit of 20 euros on the spot. The waitress says that the aim is to prevent people from not coming despite having made a reservation. Night after night, the idyllic location is full. Guests will pay a lot for delicious sea bass, calamari, Greek salad and the picturesque sea view.

Such commercially strict methods are the exception in the Greek holiday summer of 2023. However, they show what providers can afford in view of the great demand. Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni says she has never heard of such practices, as she later emphasized in an interview with the FAZ in Athens. “It is important to us to have an authentic offer that is not interchangeable, but embodies the characteristic hospitality of Greece.” Apparently, this works. Forest fires and heat waves may rage, the increased prices hurt and the attacks on Ukraine are a burden on international events – Greece’s tourism proves to be indestructible and is booming like never before.
