In order to save pensions, the rich must be taxed higher, says the co-federal spokeswoman for the Green Youth. She also makes a suggestion about working hours.

Co-federal spokeswoman for the Green Youth Katharina Stolla is calling for a four-day week with full wage compensation for the population. If that is implemented, she could also imagine a 20-hour week, said the Green politician on the political talk show Lanz on ZDF. There she discussed on Wednesday evening with the federal chairwoman of the Young Liberals, Franziska Brandmann. The politicians kept clashing. “Bild” first reported about it.

The Germans worked too much, says Stolla. Work destroys people. “A third of boys have depression, Corona has taken away our youth, inflation crisis, young people are wondering how they finance their lives.” Brandmann, on the other hand, wants to go one step further and stop pensioning at the age of 63. “That’s 3 billion a month, 36 billion a year,” she says.

“Why should I work myself out in this broken world?”

The 29-year-old sees the current pension system in danger. There used to be six contributors for every pensioner – today there are only two. Stolla contradicts this: “Pensions are too low and far too many pensioners have to live in poverty in old age,” she said. “Why should I work myself to death in this broken world and not even have the prospect of a good and secure pension?”

The Green politician also makes a counter-proposal. “Those who get a lot of pension should give a hundred euros to those who get less.” However, according to Lanz, this would not be enough. But you have to tap into the wealth of the rich, says Stolla. “We urgently need to increase taxes. Billions of euros are missing out on us because really large inheritances are not properly taxed.”

According to the young Greens, the tax increase would bring Germany 80 billion euros if citizens with assets over five million euros were additionally taxed. The principle should be followed: “The higher your wealth, the more taxes you would pay.” When Lanz asked whether the young generation was no longer willing to perform, Stolla replied: “My generation built the climate movement and in the last few weeks organized the protests against the right, in which millions took to the streets.”
