Casablanca’s “Green Schools” Program Expands, Reaching 128 Schools in Sustainability Push

Casablanca is bolstering its commitment to environmental education and responsible waste management with the continued expansion of the “Green Schools” program, which has now impacted 128 schools since its launch in 2022. The initiative, a collaborative effort between the Société de Développement Local Casablanca Baia, the Municipality of Casablanca, and the Regional Academy of Education and Training of the Casablanca–Settat region, aims to cultivate a culture of cleanliness and eco-responsibility among younger generations.
A Growing Initiative with Broadened Reach
According to a joint press release from The Bathroom House and the City of Casablanca, the third edition of the “Green Schools” program, officially launched on March 25th at the Fatima El Bourkadi primary school in the Sbata district, signifies a new phase of deployment across the municipality. This year’s edition notably integrates two charitable associations, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening the program’s solidarity dimension and expanding its benefits to a wider range of students.
The program’s success is evident in its sustained momentum, with awareness-raising activities implemented in numerous educational establishments throughout Casablanca’s diverse districts. A recent visit by Mr. Ahmed Afilal, Vice-President of the Casablanca Municipal Council in charge of the cleanliness sector, to the Ech-Chafchaouni primary school in Aïn Sebaâ, alongside municipal officials and institutional partners, underscored the dedication of all stakeholders to the program’s success.
Investing in Sustainable Infrastructure
Looking ahead to 2025, the program will be reinforced by a significant investment in infrastructure designed to ensure long-term sustainability. Specifically, 812 selective sorting bins – an average of 16 per school – and 1,000 signage and awareness panels will be installed in participating schools. “This equipment constitutes an essential lever for perpetuating the program’s achievements,” a source stated, “by consolidating, in the long term, the values and good practices transmitted to students.”
A Holistic Educational Approach
The “Green Schools” program employs a structured and consistent educational system, combining learning, awareness-raising, and engaging activities across all participating schools. The curriculum includes interactive workshops led by a qualified team, utilizing a 3D model to illustrate the journey of waste from collection to landfill. Students also receive “SAGA NASSUH” educational capsules, designed to deliver key messages in an accessible format, alongside practical exercises focused on waste sorting and eco-responsible behavior.
Furthermore, the program fosters student engagement through the “Cleanliness Ambassadors” initiative, recognizing outstanding participation with certificates, educational comics, and other learning materials. Implementation is carefully phased to avoid conflicts with exam periods, maximizing educational impact and ensuring long-term retention.

Casa Baia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local public policies focused on cleanliness and fostering a conscious, responsible generation. This commitment aligns directly with the objectives of the “Casa Nqiya” campaign, a broader initiative aimed at transforming Casablanca into a clean, intelligent, and sustainable city.
