The 58th Grimme Prize was awarded on August 26th. Among others, Bjarne Mädel, Nicholas Ofczarek and Anke Engelke were honored.

For most celebrities, Marl may not necessarily be the center of the world. Nevertheless, on August 26, the German television landscape looked at the city in North Rhine-Westphalia, which has a population of just under 90,000. The Grimme Institute based there awarded this year’s Grimme Prize on Friday.

The German-speaking stars came to receive their awards. Among others, Anke Engelke (56), Bjarne Mädel (54), Daniel Donskoy (32), Luise Heyer (37), Kurt Krömer (47), Torsten Sträter (55) and Nicholas Ofczarek (51) walked the red carpet .

“The rating is left to the viewer”

A few weeks ago, the Institute announced which 16 productions would receive awards in the categories “Fiction”, “Information & Culture”, “Entertainment” and “Children & Youth”. The winners in the “Entertainment” competition include “Friday Night Jews” with Donskoy, Joko Winterscheidt’s (43) quiz show “Who is stealing the show from me?” and an episode of “Chez Krömer” with Torsten Sträter as a guest, in which Kurt Krömer and the comedian talk about how they deal with their own depression.

Krömer had never spoken about it publicly before. After the broadcast, he noticed how many people were affected, he said. “For the first time in my life, I feel like I’ve done something really meaningful.” He denounced that many people are looking for a place in therapy but are currently not getting one.

In the “Fiction” competition, the Sky Original “The Ibiza Affair” – about the Austrian political scandal in 2019 – was awarded Ofczarek. In the jury’s justification, the “sensational acting performance, the clever adaptation of the script, the fantastic camera and last but not least the grandiose staging” were praised. “I can only interpret what’s there. And that was very good because it didn’t count either. The rating is up to the viewer. I think that’s very important,” explained the actor at the award ceremony.

In addition, there were two prizes for girls – for his directorial debut “Sörensen hat Angst”, in which he also plays, and for the TV film “Delivered”. Girls “Sörensen” avoid “to the smallest detail […] all the usual tricks of the genre” and find “his own language of representation and imagery,” it said in the justification.

“Clever and incorruptible powers of observation”

In addition, “The Mopes” with Nora Tschirner (41) received the Audience Award from the Marl Group and “Una Primavera” received the Student Jury Award. Meanwhile, Engelke was awarded the special honor of the German Adult Education Association (DVV). “With her clever powers of observation, Anke Engelke shows us that we sometimes set ourselves up too self-righteously in a very comfortable attitude – in everyday matters and also in relation to socially relevant questions”, it was previously said by DVV President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (60).

A total of 19 prizes were awarded. The moderator Jo Schück (41) led through the evening at the 58th Grimme Prize.
