A heartwarming interaction at Universal Studios Hollywood captured the internet’s attention this week, as a performer portraying the Grinch surprised a young visitor with a fluent Spanish greeting, demonstrating the park’s commitment to inclusive guest experiences. The now-viral moment, filmed on December 7th, showcases the power of connection and the joy of experiencing beloved characters in one’s native language.
A Surprise Encounter at Grinchmas
The incident unfolded during a meet-and-greet with the famously grumpy character, a seasonal favorite at Universal theme parks known for his playful cynicism. Initially addressing 4-year-old Lía in English, the Grinch received a shy “Hola” in return. “Oh!” he exclaimed, immediately switching to Spanish, asking, “No hablas Inglés?” (“You don’t speak English?”).
The video, which has garnered over 247,000 likes and more than 200 comments on Instagram, shows Lía’s face lighting up with delight as the Grinch continued the conversation in her language.
Family Travels from Mexico for Magical Moment
Lía and her family, Ana Jaqueline Martínez Plascencia, her husband Josue, and their son Eithan, traveled from Guadalajara, Mexico, to celebrate Lía’s upcoming fifth birthday on December 10th. According to Plascencia, the family had seen videos circulating online of the Grinch speaking Spanish and were hopeful for a similar experience.
“They were both super excited, they didn’t take off their costumes for a single minute, even though it was hot,” Plascencia shared in an email translated from Spanish. The family waited over four hours in line, but Plascencia noted the anticipation only grew with each step forward.
A Playful Exchange in Spanish
In the viral video, which has amassed over 1.9 million views, the Grinch playfully engages with the children, asking their names, where they are from, and if they brought him any onions – a nod to his well-known fondness for the vegetable. When the children respond they have nothing for him, the Grinch exclaims, “¡Nada! No me traen nada, feos,” (“Nothing! They bring me nothing, uglies.”).
Plascencia recounted that initially, she felt concerned that her children wouldn’t understand, “but as soon as he spoke [in Spanish] they started smiling.” She added that after the encounter, her children excitedly repeated every word the Grinch had said, even playfully mimicking his teasing remarks.
Universal Studios Hollywood Employs Bilingual Performers
According to a source familiar with the park’s operations, Universal Studios Hollywood has a long-standing practice of hiring bilingual performers for character interactions during events like Grinchmas. These performers are proficient in multiple languages, including Spanish, Japanese, and even American Sign Language, though the park does not actively advertise these capabilities.
This practice allows for more personalized and inclusive experiences for a diverse range of guests. A data visualization showing the percentage of Spanish-speaking visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood would further illustrate the impact of this initiative.
A Moment to Remember
Plascencia described the day as “wonderful,” adding that her children are already planning their return trip and what they will say to the Grinch next time. The positive response to the video online has been particularly heartwarming for the family.
“Every comment I read makes me smile. This empathy with Spanish speakers is incredible,” Plascencia said, reflecting on the outpouring of support from people around the world. The viral moment serves as a reminder of the power of small gestures and the joy of creating magical experiences for all.
