What exactly is scabies?

Scabies, or scabies, is a contagious skin condition caused by the scabies mite, the GGD writes. The mite burrows into the skin and lays eggs there. If you are in contact with someone who has scabies for more than 15 minutes, or are wearing someone’s clothing, you can become infected. The most common complaint with scabies is itching. Because scabies does not go away on its own, the GGD recommends treatment through the GP. ‘Also to prevent others from becoming infected.’
