Eastern European Grooming Gang Members Jailed for Exploiting Teenage Girls in Gateshead

A harrowing case of systematic abuse has concluded with the sentencing of five men involved in a grooming gang that targeted vulnerable teenage girls in Gateshead, England. The group, comprised of four Romanian nationals and one Albanian, received prison sentences ranging from 18 months to 14 years following an eight-week trial at Newcastle Crown Court, which concluded with guilty verdicts in October.

Decades of Abuse Uncovered

The investigation, spanning offenses committed between 2014 and 2019, revealed a disturbing pattern of exploitation. Victims, aged between 13 and 15, were subjected to sexual abuse and rape, often after being manipulated with alcohol and, in some instances, cocaine. The court heard how the perpetrators initially targeted the girls through seemingly innocuous interactions with teenage boys, fostering a false sense of connection before escalating to predatory behavior.

The gang operated, at least in part, around Saltwell Park, where members reportedly met to play football, using the location as a base for their activities. The extent of the abuse was described by investigators as “horrific,” and the impact on the victims has been devastating.

Victims Share Their Trauma

Judge Tim Gittins, during sentencing, commended the victims for their extraordinary courage in coming forward. The emotional toll on the survivors was starkly illustrated through victim impact statements. One survivor described the experience as leaving her “petrified of all men,” adding, “I don’t know if I will ever lead a normal life.” Another stated she was “naive and impressionable, and it made it easy for me to be preyed upon.” A third victim poignantly described feeling as though she was “held hostage and had to play a role,” highlighting the manipulative control exerted by her attacker.

One statement, described by Judge Gittins as “nothing less than haunting,” detailed the profound psychological scars left by the abuse, particularly after the victim developed a cocaine addiction as a result of the exploitation.

Sentencing and Individual Cases

The following individuals were sentenced on Friday:

  • Bogdan Gugiuman, 44, of Gateshead, received a 14-year sentence for rape and supplying a class A drug.
  • Codrin Dura, 27, of Gateshead, was sentenced to 13 years after being found guilty of rape, sexual activity with a child, blackmail, attempted rape, serious sexual assault, supplying a class A drug, and arranging or facilitating a child sex offense.
  • Leonard Paun, 23, of Gateshead, was jailed for five years and one month for rape, arranging or facilitating a child sex offense, sexual activity with a child, sexual assault, supplying a class A drug, and distributing photos of a child.
  • Stefan Ciuraru, 22, of Gateshead, received an 18-month sentence for four counts of sexual assault, sexual activity with a child, and causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
  • Klaudio Aleksiu, 28, of Windsor, was sentenced to six years for rape.

The court acknowledged that Aleksiu, Dura, and Paun were all juveniles at the time the offenses occurred, a factor considered during sentencing. A sixth man involved in the case was found not guilty of all charges.

Nationality “Irrelevant” to Sentencing

Judge Gittins emphasized that the defendants’ nationality was “irrelevant to the sentencing process.” However, he noted that court records indicated that all the men had entered the country legally, most as children, and had remained in the UK legitimately.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr of Northumbria Police, thanked the victims for their “composure and dignity” throughout the investigation. He stated that the case was “complex” and required significant effort to “piece together and establish the extent of the horrific offending.” He added that the girls involved had their “childhood snatched from them in the cruellest of ways by predators who targeted them as vulnerable members of our community.”
