Guatemala Weather Forecast: Cold Front to Bring Rain, Beaches Remain Inviting Through New Year’s

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) forecasts a shift in Guatemala’s weather pattern as 2025 draws to a close, with a cold front expected to bring increased rainfall, particularly in the north and central regions, while conditions remain favorable for beachgoers along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. This forecast covers the period from December 29, 2025, through January 2, 2026.

Approaching Cold Front and Early Week Conditions

A cold front is approaching from the north of the Yucatan Peninsula and is expected to arrive overnight on Monday, December 29, 2025. This system will initially generate partial cloudiness across the Petén department, the Northern Transversal Strip, and the Caribbean region of Guatemala. The Insivumeh warns that this could also lead to rainfall accompanied by electrical activity. In the Central Plateau, including Guatemala City, residents can anticipate increasing north winds.

Rainfall Patterns and Regional Impacts

The entry of humidity from the Caribbean Sea, combined with the approaching cold front, will contribute to continued rainfall in several regions. Specifically, the Central Plateau, Guatemala City, Pacific regions, Petén, Alta Verapaz, the Caribbean coast, the Northern Transversal Strip, and the mountainous areas of Motagua and eastern valleys are all expected to experience precipitation.

Recent rainfall has already saturated soils in Petén, the Northern Transversal Strip, and the Caribbean areas, with significant accumulations reported in Izabal, Alta Verapaz, and southern Petén throughout December. Isolated rain events have also impacted the bocacosta and southwestern parts of the country. Authorities recommend taking necessary precautions, as the saturated ground increases the risk of river flooding, general flooding, and landslides in the Northern and Caribbean regions.

Wind and Visibility Concerns

Atmospheric pressure is expected to increase on Tuesday, December 30, and Wednesday, December 31, 2025, resulting in north winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour (km/h). Drivers are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for fog or mist during early morning and nighttime hours, reducing visibility.

Beach Conditions Remain Favorable

Despite the incoming cold front and rainfall, the Insivumeh has highlighted that conditions will remain good for those planning to visit Guatemala’s beaches during the holiday period. Both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts are expected to offer favorable conditions for recreation.

Temperature Outlook

Maximum temperatures are anticipated to gradually decrease starting Tuesday, December 30, 2025, but will likely increase again as the weekend approaches. Regional temperature expectations include:

  • Guatemala City: 26 to 28°C
  • Central and Western Highlands: 23 to 28°C
  • Pacific Regions: 33 to 35°C
  • Petén: 30 to 32°C
  • Alta Verapaz: 24 to 26°C
  • Caribbean: 28 to 30°C
  • Motagua Region and Eastern Valleys: 32 to 34°C

While Guatemala will experience cooler, wetter conditions in the final days of 2025, the forecast suggests a return to slightly warmer temperatures at the beginning of 2026.
