by time news

In Guinea, the Minister of Justice demanded an explanation following the arrest of two civil society activists. In a statement, Alphonse Charles Wright said he had ” instructed the Attorney General at the Conakry Court of Appeal to produce a report on the reasons for these arrests ».

The Guinean Ministry of Justice demanded, on March 12, 2023, explanations for the arrest of two civil society activists. Abdoul Sako and Ismaël Diallo were arrested the day before for undisclosed reasons, then released. Both are part of organizations calling for a rapid return of civilians to the helm of this military-ruled country since September 2021.

Press lane

It is through the press that the Minister of Justice and Human Rights says he learned of the arrest of Abdoul Sako and Ismaël Diallo. Alphonse Charles Wright suggests that the gendarmes arrested the two men outside of any legal procedure.

Faced with this state of affairs, the Minister of Justice issued a press release in which he instructed the Attorney General at the Conakry Court of Appeal to produce without delay a detailed report on the reasons for these arrests.

Rare fact in Guinea, the Minister of Justice says to distance himself from this cavalier method and affirms that he will not tolerate any approach violating the rights of citizens in conflict with the law.

Examination

The two civil society activists were arrested on March 11 by gendarmes and taken to the Central Directorate of Judicial Investigations of the National Gendarmerie where they were interrogated for several hours before being handed over to their lawyer, even it’s up to him to bring them back this Monday to the same place.

Observers believe that these arrests risk jeopardizing an attempt to resume a broken dialogue between the opposition and the ruling junta.
