Rainbow Wahine Tennis Duo Advances to ITA southwest Regionals Quarterfinals

The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team is making a strong showing at the intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Southwest Regionals, with the doubles team of Sophie Rachor and Grete Gull securing a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinals. The tournament, currently underway at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Centre in San diego, California, has seen both triumphs and challenges for the Rainbow Wahine.
Rachor and Gull Dominate in Doubles Play
Newcomers Sophie Rachor and Grete Gull have quickly made their mark, winning both of their Main Draw doubles matches on Saturday. They began their run with an 8-4 victory over san Diego’s Hannah Read and Vilma Krebs hyllested in the Round of 32. The duo continued their success, defeating Kennedy Buntrock and Hina Imamura of Arizona State 8-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Singles Competition Heats Up
Rainbow Wahine also saw action in consolation singles matches,demonstrating their competitive spirit. Makeilah Nepomuceno led the team with a decisive straight-sets win over UC Riverside’s Katarina Curcic, 6-4, 6-2.
Three other UH singles matches whent to third-set super tie-breakers, highlighting the intense competition. grete Gull fought valiantly against Long Beach State’s Cecilia Costa, winning the second set 6-0 after dropping the first, but ultimately fell in the tie-breaker 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-3). Hanna Galindo also pushed her opponent, Cal Poly’s Sarah MacCallum, to a super tie-breaker after evening the match, but ultimately lost 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Emma Forgac similarly battled back from a first-set loss against UC San Diego’s Julia Visaya, but Visaya prevailed in the super tie-breaker, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7). Sophie Rachor was defeated by UCSB’s Shachf Lieberman 6-3, 6-1.
Looking Ahead to Day 4
The ITA Southwest Regionals continue on Sunday with quarterfinal and consolation matches at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in San Diego. The schedule includes the highly anticipated doubles quarterfinal featuring Rachor and Gull, as well as consolation matches for makeilah Nepomuceno, Emma Forgac, and Hanna Galindo.
