The Context: A Presidential Plea for Relief
The situation unfolded after President Joko Widodo met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) at the end of 2023. Asep explained that during the meeting,Jokowi voiced concerns about the decades-long wait times faced by Indonesian citizens hoping to perform the Hajj. “So at the end of 2023, I will review again, that the President of the Republic of Indonesia at that time had a visit to Saudi Arabia. And at that time he met MBS, Muhammad Bin Salman,” Asep saeid.
In response to Jokowi’s concerns, MBS approved an additional quota of 20,000 hajj places for Indonesian pilgrims in 2024, bringing the total quota to 221,000. Asep emphasized that this additional quota was a gift from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Indonesian people, not to individuals.
Suspects Named in the Case
After a seven-month inquiry and investigation, the KPK officially named Gus Yaqut and his former special staff, Ishfah Abidal Aziz (also known as Gus Alex), as suspects in the alleged hajj quota corruption case on Thursday, January 8, 2026. “The suspect was steadfast yesterday, Thursday 8 January 2026,” said Budi Prasetyo at the KPK Building in Jakarta on Friday, January 9, 2026.
While Gus Yaqut and Gus Alex have been named as suspects, they have not yet been detained as the investigation continues. The KPK is pursuing the case under Articles 2 and 3 of Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Law,which address potential state losses.
