Guterres criticizes Venezuela operation – US speaks of criminal prosecution
The United States doesn’t consider its actions in Venezuela an act of war, but rather an act of law enforcement, according to U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, speaking before the UN Security Council. President Donald Trump reportedly extended several diplomatic options to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, all of which were declined. The U.S. has formally indicted Maduro on charges including “drug terrorism.”
accusations have surfaced that the U.S.broke international law during its operation in Venezuela. At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres called for respect of the “political independence” of states. Guterres stated the U.S. operation did not adhere to the established rules of international law, and urged all parties in Venezuela to pursue dialog.
