Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Lands on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026

A ground-up remake of the seminal first-person shooter, Halo: combat Evolved, is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026, marking a historic shift for the franchise and a potential turning point in the console wars.

For over two decades, Halo has been synonymous with Xbox, representing a cornerstone of console gaming and a symbol of Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem. The decision to bring the remake to PlayStation and PC platforms signals a notable strategic move, broadening the game’s reach and potentially reshaping the competitive landscape.

The original Combat Evolved plunges players into the role of the supersoldier Master Chief, who crash-lands on the enigmatic ringworld known as Halo. Accompanied by his AI companion, Cortana, he must defend his crewmates from the alien Covenant and unravel a galactic threat. The narrative, lauded for its compelling characters and expansive universe, remains a touchstone for the military science fiction genre.

According to a creative director, the remake is designed to appeal to a broad audience. “It’s a great time to revisit Combat Evolved for new players, for established Halo players, and maybe even for old friends playing on different hardware today to allow them to play together and enjoy the franchise together again,” they stated during a recent reveal. A game director added, “For new players, this is the right time for you to jump in. Think of this as your introduction into this huge franchise [that] we have been building for the past 25 years.”

Campaign Evolved isn’t simply a visual upgrade; it’s a complete reimagining of the original experience. The remake boasts new missions, refined level design, and modernized gameplay mechanics. Players can enjoy two-player split-screen on consoles, and online or networked co-op for up to four players across both console and PC platforms. The game will feature high-definition visuals, improved controls, and a reimagined user experience.

Expanded Gameplay and Narrative Depth

The remake will introduce three new missions set prior to the events of Halo: combat Evolved, allowing players to join Sergeant Avery Johnson and encounter new characters, enemies, and environments. These additions aim to enrich the series’ early lore while preserving the original campaign’s scope and atmosphere.

Classic moments from halo: combat Evolved will be revitalized with enhanced cinematics, utilizing new motion-capture performances and re-recorded dialog from the original cast. The audio landscape has also been overhauled, featuring a remastered soundtrack and rebuilt sound effects that aim to capture the distinctive feel of Halo’s weapons, vehicles, and combat.

Players will have access to an expanded arsenal, incorporating nine additional weapons from across the Halo universe, including the Energy Sword,Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle. Vehicle gameplay has been updated, allowing Master Chief to hijack enemy vehicles, and the iconic Warthog now accommodates a full four-player Fireteam.

Customization and Community Engagement

Campaign Evolved will feature the largest collection of gameplay-modifying Skulls in any Halo campaign. These modifiers allow players to revisit missions with altered weapon spawns, enemy behavior, player attributes, and environmental effects, offering a high degree of replayability.

A 13-minute gameplay presentation, showcasing the fourth mission (“The Silent Cartographer”) from Halo: Combat Evolved, was released alongside the announcement.

The popular community event, Halo Fest, is also scheduled to return in 2026, following its reveal during the Halo World Championship – the largest esports tournament for the franchise – which took place last weekend.

Halo: Campaign Evolved will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2026, offering a new generation of players the chance to experience a defining moment in gaming history, and allowing veterans to revisit a beloved classic with a fresh viewpoint.
