Hamas and Israel expected to release more hostages and prisoners in the West Bank amid ceasefire extension negotiations

Hamas and Israel are set to release more prisoners and hostages as the final day of a six-day truce in the Gaza Strip conflict approaches. There is speculation as to whether mediator Qatar could negotiate another extension. Israeli media has reported that Israel received a list of hostages expected to be released by Hamas on Wednesday. A meeting of leaders from Israel’s Mossad and the United States’ CIA took place on Tuesday, during which they explored possible parameters of a new phase of the truce deal, including the possible release of male or military hostages held by Hamas. The Group of Seven nations has called for an extension of the ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid. The truce has brought a temporary respite to Gaza, which has been left devastated by weeks of fighting and bombardment. The U.N. Secretary-General has also called for a humanitarian ceasefire for Gaza. Currently, around 159 hostages remain in Gaza, including eight to nine Americans. The U.S. government expressed hope for their release and indicated it would work with Qatar to extend the pause in fighting. The temporary ceasefire has allowed for the passage of humanitarian aid into Gaza. U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths was set to discuss the reopening of the Kerem Shalom crossing in order to allow for more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Israel.
