The body of israeli-American soldier Itay Chen has been positively identified after being returned by Hamas via the red Cross, Israel confirmed Tuesday. The 19-year-old staff Sergeant was among the hostages taken during the October 7th attacks on Israel, and his remains were part of a larger exchange under a ceasefire deal brokered last month by former US President Donald Trump.
The Israeli prime minister’s office stated, “Following the completion of the identification process… IDF representatives informed the family of the fallen hostage, Staff Sergeant Itay Chen, that their loved one has been returned to Israel and positively identified.” This confirmation brings a somber closure for Chen’s family, who lost contact with him after he reported his base was under attack.
Recovery and Identification Process
Hamas’s military wing initially announced the recovery of a soldier’s body in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza city.Israel afterward permitted members of the group, alongside Red Cross personnel, to search for remains within the area, which remains under Israeli military control. The painstaking identification process followed, ultimately leading to the confirmation of Chen’s identity.
Chen was stationed at a base near the gaza border when the attacks commenced on October 7, 2023. Initially,he was believed to have been held hostage, but the Israeli military revealed in March 2024 that he had died in combat during the initial assault and his body had been transported to Gaza.
Accusations and Challenges in Hostage Recovery
the Israeli government has accused Hamas of intentionally delaying the return of deceased hostages as the ceasefire agreement took effect on October 10th. However, Hamas maintains that locating the bodies amidst the widespread destruction and rubble presents meaningful challenges.
Under the terms of the ceasefire, Hamas committed to returning 20 living and 28 deceased hostages within a 72-hour period. All living Israeli hostages were released on October 13th in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza. To date, Israel has handed over the bodies of 270 Palestinians in exchange for the remains of 19 Israeli hostages, and also the bodies of two foreign nationals – one Thai and one Nepalese.
Remaining Hostages and Ongoing Conflict
As of Tuesday, five of the seven remaining deceased hostages in Gaza are Israeli citizens, with one each from Tanzania and Thailand. All but one of these individuals were among the 251 people abducted during the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, an attack that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths.
Israel’s response to the October 7th attacks has been a sustained military campaign in Gaza. According to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry, this campaign has resulted in over 68,800 fatalities.
Earlier on Tuesday, a hospital official in gaza City reported that a man was killed by Israeli fire in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza. The Israeli military responded by stating its
