Hamas wants to negotiate a “complete ceasefire” with Israel in the Gaza Strip prior to any agreement, a senior official of the Palestinian Islamist movement told AFP on Monday.

“We are talking above all about a complete and total ceasefire and not a temporary truce”said Taher al-Nounou, a senior Hamas official, after a meeting in Paris this weekend between American, Israeli, Qatari and Egyptian officials to silence the guns in the Palestinian territory.

Once the fighting has stopped, “the rest of the details can be discussed”including the release of the hundred Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.

Hopes for a truce revived

Behind the scenes, negotiations are also continuing with a view to a truce. CIA Director William Burns met senior Egyptian, Israeli and Qatari officials in Paris on Sunday. A framework for a truce accompanied by new releases of hostages will be transmitted to Hamas, announced Monday from Washington the Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed ben Abdulrahmane Al-Thani, reporting “notable progress”. But it was unclear Monday evening whether the Hamas official was responding to the framework or not.

The Hamas attack on October 7 resulted in the deaths of more than 1,140 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official Israeli figures. Some 250 people were kidnapped and taken to Gaza, according to Israeli authorities. In total, 132 hostages are still captive in the Palestinian territory, of whom 28 are believed to be dead. The proposed agreement would involve a two-month truce and the release of all hostages against Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, according to the “New York Times.”

In response to the Hamas attack, Israel vowed to“annihilate” the Islamist movement in power in Gaza since 2007, which it classifies as a terrorist organization like the United States and the European Union. Israeli bombings and military operations in the Palestinian territory have left 26,637 dead, the vast majority of them women, children and adolescents, according to a report updated Monday from the Hamas Ministry of Health.
