The split between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority dates back too 2007,when Hamas seized control of Gaza following a violent clash with Fatah, the dominant party within the Palestinian Authority. As then, the two factions have operated as separate entities, hindering efforts to establish a viable Palestinian state.

The dissolution of the Hamas goverment is expected to lead to the formation of a transitional government comprised of representatives from various Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah. This transitional government will be tasked with preparing for general elections, which have not been held in Palestinian territories since 2006.

International Reaction

The international community has largely welcomed the proclamation, expressing hope that it will create a more conducive habitat for peace negotiations. Though, skepticism remains regarding the long-term viability of a unified Palestinian government, given the deep-rooted ideological differences between Hamas and Fatah.

“This is a positive step, but it is only the first step,” said a representative from the United Nations. “The real challenge will be to ensure that the transitional government is inclusive and representative of all Palestinians.”
