From Chernow’s Biography to Broadway Phenomenon
“Hamilton” is based on the acclaimed 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also originated the title role, reimagines the story of one of America’s Founding Fathers for a modern audience.
The production meticulously chronicles Hamilton’s life, from his pivotal role in the American Revolution to his tenure as the first Secretary of the Treasury. It also explores his complex and ultimately tragic rivalry with U.S.vice President Aaron Burr. The show’s creative team includes director Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervisor and orchestrator Alex Lacamoire.
A Decade of Accolades and Enduring Legacy
“Hamilton” officially opened on Aug. 6, 2015, at the Richard Rodgers Theater, quickly becoming a cultural touchstone. The show has since garnered an unprecedented 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, solidifying its place in theatrical history.
This year, the show has been celebrating its 10th birthday with a series of special events. In June, the original Broadway cast reunited for a medley of songs at the Tony Awards. On Aug. 6, the current cast performed for members of the original production and a host of celebrities at an invite-only anniversary event.
A filmed performance of “Hamilton” from 2016 debuted on Sept. 5 at the Delacorte Theatre, with cast members in attendance. The performance was previously released on Disney+ in 2020, bringing the show to an even wider audience. Notably, Leslie Odom Jr., a Tony Award winner for his portrayal of Aaron Burr, returned to the Richard rodgers Stage this year to reprise his role.
