IDC defines these cameras as portable, handheld devices equipped with onboard computing, stabilization, and at least 2K resolution.

This growth isn’t just a blip. IDC projects that shipments could exceed 40 million units by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20%. The shift reflects a broader trend in consumer imaging, where convenience and accessibility are increasingly valued alongside traditional photographic quality. The rise of short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, coupled with the growing popularity of vlogging, has fueled demand for smaller, simpler cameras that can easily capture and share life’s moments. This trend in global short-video platform usage is a key driver of this market expansion.

The boom in handheld smart cameras is happening alongside a more challenging market for conventional digital cameras—DSLRs and mirrorless models. While these cameras continue to appeal to enthusiasts and professionals prioritizing image quality, interchangeable lenses, and extensive post-production capabilities, handheld smart cameras are attracting a different demographic: younger consumers, students, women, and sports enthusiasts who prioritize portability, durability, and ease of sharing. DJI Dominates, While GoPro Faces Headwinds

Leading the charge in this expanding market is DJI, which captured a commanding 62% of global shipments in 2025. The Chinese manufacturer surpassed 10 million units shipped for the first time, bolstered by strong sales of its panoramic cameras and detachable action cameras, as well as continued international expansion. The DJI Pocket 3 proved particularly popular in the gimbal camera segment, while action camera shipments increased by more than 150%, accounting for nearly half of the company’s overall volume. DJI’s rapid product launches, such as the Osmo Nano (selling over 600,000 units in just four months) and the Osmo 360 (capturing over 35% market share in the fourth quarter), demonstrate its ability to quickly capitalize on emerging trends.

Insta360 remains a significant competitor, maintaining its leadership in panoramic cameras and detachable action cameras with over 3.4 million units shipped globally. The company’s X5 and X4 ranges continue to perform well, and its Air line offers more affordable options. Notably, the Ace series saw shipments grow by over 200%, and detachable camera share exceeded 50%. Insta360’s focus on innovation in panoramic imaging continues to resonate with consumers.

But, GoPro is facing increasing pressure from Chinese competitors. Shipments declined in both the action and panoramic segments, with weaker sales in China. The company is now focusing more on the European and United States markets. Latest products like the Max2 and Lite Hero failed to generate significant traction, and IDC reports that GoPro is under pressure across its hardware, sales channels, ecosystem, and regional performance. The company’s struggles highlight the challenges faced by established players in a rapidly evolving market.

Segment Breakdown: Action, Gimbal, and Panoramic

Within the handheld smart camera market, the action camera segment remains the largest, shipping over 8 million units in 2025—a 61% increase year-over-year. Both DJI and Insta360 gained market share through new product offerings, while detachable action camera shipments surpassed 1.3 million units. While Insta360 initially led in detachable action cameras, DJI quickly gained ground with the Osmo Nano.

Gimbal cameras experienced even faster growth, with shipments rising by more than 100% in 2025. DJI’s Pocket series continues to set the standard in this category, widely used for short-video and vlog recording. Panoramic cameras also saw strong expansion, topping 2.5 million units shipped—a 50% increase—with Insta360 retaining the lead and DJI making significant gains with the launch of the Osmo 360.

Industry Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the impressive growth, the handheld smart camera market still has considerable room for expansion. IDC notes that penetration rates remain low compared to smartphones and PCs, suggesting a large potential customer base. Improving user experience and lowering prices are expected to drive wider adoption. However, vendors are also facing challenges, particularly rising memory prices. These cameras typically have lower average selling prices than other consumer electronics, making them more vulnerable to fluctuations in memory costs, which could squeeze profit margins.

Software is becoming increasingly critical. Image stabilization, HDR, night shooting, noise reduction, and editing capabilities are all heavily reliant on sophisticated algorithms and data analysis. Larger manufacturers with robust software development capabilities are well-positioned to strengthen their market positions. Hardware innovation continues as well, with manufacturers exploring custom CMOS sensors, system-on-chip designs, and even dedicated AI chips to enhance performance. The integration of variable-aperture designs, previously uncommon in this category, is also gaining traction.
