jpnn.comJAKARTA – Bishop of the Archdiocese of Jakarta Ignatius Cardinal Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo said that handling the crime of human trafficking (TPPO) requires international cooperation.

This was conveyed by Suharyo at a press conference commemorating Easter 2024 at the Cathedral Church, Jakarta, Sunday (31/3) responding to cases of universities involved in TPPO using an internship program for students to Germany or a ferry job.

“Regarding TIP, when it comes to a country like Germany, it is very surprising. “Within the church environment, there is an international movement or organization called Talitha Kum, who is in that organization who handles human trafficking and is often invited here (Cathedral Church) to be asked to tell stories,” said Jakarta Archbishop Cardinal Suharyo.

He explained that within the Society of Jesus or commonly known as the Jesuits, there is also a Jesuit Refugee Service to help handle TIP cases.

“Because the refugees who came from Sri Lanka were also linked to human trafficking, they were told to pay this and that,” he said.

He previously stated that the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam), Marshal TNI (Purn) Hadi Tjahjanto, had also directly checked security at the Jakarta Cathedral Church, which started the series of Easter tri-holy services on Thursday (28/3).

“The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs came here yesterday and has coordinated with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Education and Culture, Police and other parties, it will be taken care of. Indeed, I see that human trafficking is very tempting, in Asia the assets are up to IDR 2,500 trillion,” he said.

According to Hadi, TPPO started from the greed of mankind who wanted greater profits without caring about their own brothers and sisters.
