Hanoi’s Strategic Sports Investment Propels Vietnam to Regional Dominance
Hanoi’s commitment to long-term, sustainable investment in athletics has yielded significant results, establishing the city as a powerhouse in Vietnamese sports and a key contributor to the nation’s success at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games. The Hanoi sports sector delivered an impressive performance, demonstrating both quantitative growth and qualitative improvements in its athletes and programs.
A Gold Medal Performance at the 33rd SEA Games
At the recent 33rd Southeast Asian Games, Hanoi athletes secured a substantial share of Vietnam’s overall medal count. Representing 20.10% of the 841-member Vietnamese delegation – a total of 169 athletes – the Hanoi contingent captured 33.33% of the nation’s gold medals. This achievement underscores Hanoi’s established leadership in the Vietnamese sports landscape, built on a foundation of tradition, strategic investment, and a forward-looking development strategy.
Hanoi athletes excelled across a diverse range of disciplines, including Olympic and Asian Games events, alongside traditional martial arts and team competitions. Gold medals were won in gymnastics, track and field, boxing, taekwondo, shooting, rowing, karate, fencing, wrestling, kickboxing, bowling, chess, petanque, sepak takraw, handball, women’s futsal, and men’s youth soccer.
Cultivating Champions: A Focus on Olympic Sports
A significant portion of Hanoi’s gold medal success came from Olympic sports, aligning with Vietnam’s broader national sports development strategy. Athletes like Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics), Ha Thi Linh (boxing), Nguyen Xuan Thanh (taekwondo), Hoang Thi Minh Hanh and Nguyen Thi Hang (athletics), Pung Viet Dung (shooting), Can That Du and Nguyen Hu Dinh (wrestling), Dinh Thi Hao (rowing), and Dinh Thi Huong (karate) were instrumental in securing these victories and are recognized for their exceptional skill.
Beyond individual achievements, Hanoi-trained athletes also played pivotal roles in team sports. Core players from Hanoi formed the backbone of the gold medal-winning women’s futsal team, U22 men’s team, men’s Sepak takraw (4-a-side) squad, and women’s handball team.
Long-Term Investment: The Key to Sustainable Success
Experts attribute Hanoi’s success to a consistent, goal-oriented investment strategy that prioritizes long-term development over short-term gains. “The most distinguishing characteristics of Hanoi players are their outstanding physical strength, technical ability and fighting spirit,” stated a Hanoi national team coach. “They receive systematic training and a long-term development plan from an early age, which allows them to adapt quickly when they join the national team and maintain consistent performance in major competitions such as the SEA Games.”
This commitment is backed by concrete policy changes. According to Pham Xuan Tai, Deputy Director of Hanoi City’s Department of Culture and Sports, the achievements at the 33rd SEA Games are the result of a “long-term, deep and systematic investment process,” particularly through the implementation of groundbreaking policies enacted from 2023 to 2025.
Incentivizing Excellence: Policies for Athletes and Coaches
City People’s Committee Resolutions No. 13/2023/NQ-HĐND and No. 65/2025/NQ-HĐND provide a legal framework for supporting top athletes, especially those qualifying for the Olympic Games. The scheme offers up to VND17 million (approximately $660 USD) in monthly support for four years.
Hanoi’s approach extends beyond athletes, recognizing the crucial role of coaches and veteran athletes. The city provides support to those who have dedicated their lives to the sport, even after their competitive careers have ended, fostering stability and ensuring a continued pipeline of expertise.
A Vision for the Future: 2030 and Beyond
Hanoi’s sports development strategy extends to 2030, with a vision reaching 2045. The city aims to maintain its leading position in national sports, dispatch at least 30% of Vietnam’s delegation to future SEA Games, and increase participation in regular physical activity to approximately 50% of the population.
This vision is supported by significant investments in sports infrastructure, including the development of the Olympic Sports City and the Red River Scenic Road project. The enactment of the 2024 Waterworks Act is also expected to contribute to the creation of world-class sporting facilities. .
Hanoi’s impressive performance at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games demonstrates that the city is not only a vital source of talent for national sports but also a model for systematic and sustainable development. By prioritizing long-term vision, strategic investment, and comprehensive policies, Hanoi’s sports sector is poised to continue its leadership role, driving growth and elevating the status of Vietnamese sports on the regional and international stage.
