by Grace Chen

Colchester, January 9, 2026 — Colchester United midfielder Harry Anderson is facing a potentially prolonged absence from the pitch due to a significant knee injury, threatening to derail the team’s push for a playoff spot. The 28-year-old is scheduled to consult with a specialist, but manager Danny Cowley is preparing for the likelihood of surgery.

Anderson’s Injury a Blow to U’s Playoff Hopes

The midfielder’s absence comes as Colchester battles for a spot in the League Two playoffs.

  • Harry Anderson sustained a medial ligament injury, adding to existing knee concerns.
  • Manager Danny Cowley anticipates Anderson may require surgery.
  • Anderson has been a key contributor this season, scoring eight goals in 22 appearances.
  • Colchester’s recent match against Chesterfield was postponed, marking the second consecutive game affected.

“Harry’s done very well to this point to play with a knee that probably needed tidying up, and now he’s picked up what is a pretty nasty medial ligament injury,” Cowley revealed to BBC Essex Sport. “There’s a possibility they could combine both surgeries together – we just need to speak to the surgeon about the best route forward.”

What is the extent of Harry Anderson’s injury? Anderson has suffered a medial ligament injury, potentially requiring surgery in addition to addressing pre-existing knee issues.

Anderson’s impact this season has been substantial, having netted eight goals in 22 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Harrogate Town. His stellar form earned him the League Two player of the month award for October, and he has been instrumental in guiding the U’s to ninth place, just four points shy of the coveted playoff positions.

Cowley praised Anderson’s resilience and dedication, stating, “I think he’s had a brilliant season and credit to him, because early on it wasn’t all going his way. He found himself out of the team but Harry did what Harry does best, he’s super durable and kept working. Moving him to the left opened it up for him and he’ll be a loss as a player, but also as a person.”

The club has already experienced disruption to its schedule, with their away game at Chesterfield on Saturday postponed. This follows the cancellation of their home fixture against Accrington Stanley on January 4th, marking the second consecutive match call-off.

In response to the team’s needs, Colchester has signed 19-year-old forward Freddie Ingram from National League side Eastleigh, following a successful trial. Ingram will initially join the Under-21 squad.
