Harry Lloyd to Portray George Martin in Sam Mendes’ Highly Anticipated Beatles Biopic

A definitive cast member has been confirmed for Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-part cinematic event chronicling the lives and careers of The Beatles, with British actor Harry Lloyd set to embody the iconic producer George Martin.

The casting announcement was made by Martin’s son, Giles Martin, during an interview on the Ryan Tubridy Show on Virgin Radio U.K. The younger Martin, who is also collaborating on the films, lauded Lloyd’s dedication, describing his work thus far as “great” and “committed.”

Lloyd is perhaps best recognized by American audiences for his portrayal of Viserys Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Since then, the actor has built a strong resume with roles in acclaimed British television series such as The Fear and Wolf Hall, alongside appearances in Manhattan, Counterpart, Brave New World, and Legion.

The role of George Martin, often referred to as “the Fifth Beatle,” is expected to be a crucial, though supporting, element of Mendes’ films. Martin’s influence on the band’s sound and trajectory was immeasurable. He was the first producer to recognize the potential of the then-unknown group, signing them to EMI’s Parlophone label after numerous others had declined.

Martin’s innovative approach allowed The Beatles unprecedented creative control. He permitted them to utilize their own instruments, craft their own songs, and maintain their distinctive working-class Northern accents – a departure from industry norms at the time. Throughout much of their career, Martin served as the band’s primary studio collaborator, producing nearly all of their albums.

However, the relationship between Martin and the band experienced strain in later years. Reports suggest he was largely excluded from the recording sessions for The White Album, leading him to take a vacation mid-production. Notably, Let It Be remains the only Beatles album where Martin does not receive credit as the lead producer, with Phil Spector taking the helm – though Martin still made contributions.

Lloyd joins a stellar ensemble cast already in place for the project. Paul Mescal will portray Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson will embody John Lennon, Joseph Quinn will play George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan will take on the role of Ringo Starr. The film’s female leads have also been confirmed, with Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey.

The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event is currently in production, with the first installment slated for release in theaters in April 2028.
