Until now, nutritional advice against decay has mainly focused on the need for the elderly to eat a lot of protein.

But now a group of researchers at Harvard University has discovered a forgotten group of foods that appear to be effective in slowing down the process of aging.

The good news is that most of those good foods are available in supermarkets year-round.

‘An apple a day …’

The key to slowing down decay, the researchers say, lies in flavonols — a type of naturally occurring plant pigment found in a number of fruits, vegetables and herbs.

In particular, the type of flavonol known as quercetin appears to be one of the most important components in preventing decline in the elderly.

This is according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The results of the study are based on a so-called cohort with data from 1701 people who were followed for a number of years.

According to the researchers, the risk of decline was reduced by 20 percent with just 10 milligrams of flavonols per day.

That’s the amount you get with a regular, medium-sized apple.
