Has the religious affairs police been withdrawn in Iran? Attorney General’s Strategy in Iran?

by time news

The government has clarified its position that the hijab law will continue in Iran. Although the Attorney General said that the religious affairs police will be withdrawn, the Iranian government is not ready to confirm or deny this, since the anti-hijab movement has started in Iran for the past two months. The government protests in Iran started when Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman, was arrested and later killed by Iran’s religious affairs police for allegedly not wearing a hijab.

Mandatory hijab law came into force in Iran four years after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. The Religious Affairs Police came into existence as a mechanism to ensure compliance with the country’s dress code. The Religious Affairs Police, which patrol the entire country, consist of both men and women. They usually travel in white vans. Patrolling is mainly done in places where young people congregate and spend time.

Their main job is to ensure that all citizens of Iran follow the dress code there. The dress code mainly says two things. Women must wear head covering hijab and secondly women should not wear tight clothes. Violators will be arrested and sent to re-education center… In recent times there has been widespread violence against women in the name of this dress code.

The same incidents of violence brought the people to the streets, women were protesting by burning their hijabs.. Students and social and cultural activists were all mobilized in this strike. The people took to the streets despite the strong suppression. However, the government representatives have not made any statement that the religious affairs police will be withdrawn.
