Thailand Races to Restore Hat Yai After Flood Damage, Prime Minister Outlines Recovery Plan

Thailand is mobilizing resources to address widespread devastation in the Hat Yai District of Songkhla Province, with a focus on waste management and rapid economic recovery. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, speaking on December 6, 2025, detailed the government’s strategy for managing over 150,000 tons of waste and restoring normalcy to the affected region.

Immediate Waste Removal a Top Priority

The immediate challenge facing Hat Yai is the sheer volume of debris left in the wake of recent flooding. The Prime Minister stated that the current strategy involves transporting the waste out of the city, with a request to residents to consolidate garbage in front of their homes for collection. Addressing concerns about the resulting odors, he emphasized the need to expedite incineration processes and utilize landfill capacity where appropriate.

“There is no way to have everything perfect,” the Prime Minister acknowledged. “Take out trash from important places or dangerous places that may cause disease to villagers first.”

14-Day Recovery Framework Nearing Completion

The government has established a 14-day framework for recovery, with a key milestone being the restoration of road access within seven days to facilitate the return of residents. According to the Prime Minister, significant progress has been made, with water and electricity restored to most homes. Currently, only approximately 30 vulnerable individuals remain in shelters, and the recovery timeline is on track.

“Now it is considered to be back together,” the Prime Minister stated. “Everything must be expedited as quickly as possible.”

Addressing Inter-Agency Coordination and Potential Exploitation

The influx of aid workers from various agencies has presented logistical challenges. While acknowledging potential friction, the Prime Minister indicated that commanders have been instructed to mediate any disputes and maintain a collaborative environment. He expressed understanding for the eagerness to assist, stating, “Who wants to help everyone do good things. Come help the people.”

Furthermore, the Prime Minister addressed concerns about potential exploitation of the disaster, firmly stating that cleanup efforts are the responsibility of the government, not individual citizens. “Clean the city is a government duty,” he asserted. “The government is not telling people to take responsibility for cleaning up.”

Financial Aid and Business Recovery Initiatives

The government is actively distributing financial aid to those affected, with additional funds slated for approval by the Cabinet on December 9th. Compensation will be differentiated based on housing status, with tenants receiving funds and homeowners receiving assistance for repairs.

A key component of the recovery plan is support for small businesses. Short-term, interest-free loans of 100,000 baht per person will be made available to entrepreneurs. The Prime Minister also directed the Secretary-General of the Office of the Insurance Commission to accelerate insurance claim payouts and explore tax exemptions or other measures to address property damage.

Preparing for Potential Rainfall and Streamlining Aid Delivery

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister acknowledged the possibility of rainfall next week, suggesting it could aid in cleansing the country while urging continued caution. A critical focus remains on streamlining the delivery of aid, particularly for those who registered online, where processing times are currently slower than in-person applications.

“Online must be faster,” the Prime Minister emphasized. “Everything must be requested online, and must expedite action. It’s definitely over next week. And I apologize for the delay.”

The government remains committed to a swift and comprehensive recovery for Hat Yai, prioritizing the well-being of its citizens and the restoration of economic stability.
