Hayden Panettiere’s ex-fiancé gets legal guardianship to protect their daughter’s inheritance

Hayden Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, has been granted temporary legal guardianship of the late actress’s estate to protect their 11-year-old daughter’s inheritance, according to a California court ruling on October 8, 2026.

The Los Angeles County court appointed Klitschko as the temporary estate guardian for Kaya, Panettiere’s sole heir, after the actress died of an accidental drug overdose at age 36 on August 16, 2026. A coroner’s report confirmed the cause of death involved multiple drugs, including fentanyl, and noted Panettiere had recently completed a rehabilitation stay. Klitschko, who has sole custody of Kaya and resides with her in Ukraine, filed an urgent petition on September 24 to prevent the loss of assets tied to the estate.

Legal Battle Over Guardianship

Klitschko’s petition cited concerns that federal law enforcement agents investigating Panettiere’s death and an unnamed nonfamily member had taken items from her property, including jewelry sold at a pawn shop. His attorney, Diane Park, argued that without immediate action, assets risked being lost, damaged, or dissipated, and that Panettiere’s upcoming tax obligations could harm Kaya’s inheritance. Judge Stephanie Santoro approved the guardianship, stating Klitschko’s actions were “sufficient” to protect the child’s interests.

Lesley Vogel, Panettiere’s mother, consented to Klitschko’s appointment, according to court documents. The ruling grants him temporary control until a permanent administrator is selected, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for December 7. Kaya, who appeared remotely at the October 8 hearing, confirmed her identity to the court but was not required to attend future proceedings.

Estate Management and Investigations

Investigations into Panettiere’s death remain ongoing, with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach reportedly present at the Greenville, South Carolina, apartment where she was found unresponsive. Klitschko has pledged to ensure Kaya remembers her mother “with respect,” though the legal and emotional challenges for the child persist.

The case highlights the complexities of estate management in high-profile deaths, with guardianship decisions often balancing legal requirements, familial ties, and the well-being of minor heirs. For Kaya, the autumn has been marked by grief and a legal process few children experience, as her father assumes responsibility for her inheritance.
