GARNI, Armenia – The Symphony orchestra of Armenia, led by artistic director Sergey Smbatyan, paid homage to the late singer-songwriter Hayko with a moving outdoor concert on August 31. Held at the 1st-century Temple of Garni, the event celebrated the musical legacy of Hayk Hakobyan, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 48.
The concert, titled “Symphonic Hayko,” aimed to bring Hayko’s dream to life: his music played by a symphonic orchestra with visuals projected on a large screen.
Sona Rubenyan, a prominent armenian singer, delivered a particularly poignant performance. “The song thay chose to open the concert was the song that played on my wedding day as our love song. To sing it with such deep emotion at the start of this concert was incredibly moving.”

The concert’s director, Hratch keshishian, explained the genesis of the event. “The idea for ‘hayko Symphonique’ in Garni came spontaneously,” he said. “We really wanted Maestro Sergey Smbatyan to lead the orchestra, adn we envisioned an open-air venue. Someone suggested Garni, and Tigran Virabbyan immediately embraced the concept, collaborating with the Hayko hakobyan Foundation.”
Echoes of the Beloved Artist
The atmosphere at the ancient temple was electric as the orchestra, bathed in the sunset and later the night sky, wove through Hayko’s iconic melodies. “here, under the open sky, each note evoked love, desire, and memories,” a spokesperson noted. “It allowed everyone to feel that Hayko has never left; he lives in his music, among us.”
