US Women’s Hockey Dominates Czechia in Milan Olympics Opener, 5-1
The United States women’s national hockey team launched thier campaign at the Milan Cortina Games wiht a decisive 5-1 victory over Czechia on Thursday, signaling their intent to contend for gold. The win extended the Americans’ perfect record against the Czechs in international play to 8-0, showcasing their continued dominance on the ice.
A Historic Debut and American Firepower
The Americans wasted no time establishing control, fueled by a raucous crowd at the Rho Ice Hockey Arena. A resounding “U-S-A!” chant erupted as the puck dropped,setting the tone for a dominant performance. Alex Carpenter opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period,tipping in a shot from Megan Keller. The second period saw a flurry of activity, with joy Dunne and Hayley Scamurra finding the back of the net within 86 seconds of each other, extending the lead to 3-1.

Czechia Fights, But Falls Short
Despite the final score, Czechia demonstrated resilience. Barbora Jurickova scored their lone goal, capitalizing on a breakaway immediately after exiting the penalty box to briefly cut the American lead to 3-1. However,the Czechs were heavily outshot,31-9 through two periods,and ultimately unable to overcome the American offensive pressure. Goaltender Klara Peslarova finished with an impressive 37 saves, but the volume of shots proved insurmountable.
This was only the second Olympic appearance for the czech team, having previously lost to the Americans in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Beijing Games. Their record against the U.S. remains challenging,with six losses in world championship play,including a narrow 2-1 defeat in the semifinals last april.

The day also saw action in Group B, where Sweden mounted a comeback to defeat Germany 4-1, thanks to a two-goal performance from Lina Ljungblom. Italy secured their first victory in their second Olympic appearance, defeating france 4-1.
However, the scheduled Group A game between defending Olympic champion canada and Finland was postponed until February 12th due to a stomach virus sweeping through the Finnish team, leaving them with only eight skaters and two goalies.
The presence of high-profile figures, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco rubio, at the American’s opening game underscored the national significance of the event. A large delegation, including USA Hockey officials, occupied a prominent section of seats near the penalty box.
