The headphones and earbuds many of us rely on daily – for work calls, music, or simply blocking out distractions – may contain a hidden concern: potentially harmful chemicals. A recent European study has revealed that all 81 models of headphones tested contained substances flagged as dangerous, raising questions about long-term exposure and consumer safety. The study, conducted by the ToxFREE LIFE for All consortium and published in February 2026, focused on identifying endocrine disruptors – chemicals that can interfere with the body’s hormone system – within the plastic components of headphones, and earbuds. Researchers analyzed materials from devices purchased in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, and from online platforms Shein and Temu. The analysis included plastics, foams, cushions, ear tips, and cables, testing for bisphenols, phthalates, chlorinated paraffins, brominated flame retardants, and organophosphorus flame retardants.
The findings were consistent across all tested products: concerning substances were detected in every single one. Specifically, Bisphenol A (BPA) was identified in 177 out of 180 samples (98%), whereas Bisphenol S (BPS), a common substitute for BPA, was found in 137 samples (76%). While the concentrations measured don’t represent an immediate, acute danger, experts are concerned about the cumulative effect of low-dose exposure over years, particularly through prolonged skin contact and the warming effect of wearing headphones directly on or in the body.
What Brands Are Affected?
Perhaps surprisingly, the study found that neither price nor brand reputation offered any guarantee of safety. Popular brands including AirPods, Bose, Sony, Sennheiser, Razer, HyperX, and JBL were all found to contain bisphenols, phthalates, and chlorinated paraffins in the plastics of some of their models, varying in concentration. A premium model costing 400 euros could contain the same problematic substances as a budget option, a particularly unsettling discovery for consumers who assume higher prices equate to higher quality and safety standards.
However, not all models failed the tests.
