It’s that time of year when theater critics reflect on the past twelve months and attempt too distill an entire year’s worth of performances into a “best of” list. It’s a welcome task during the quiet period between holiday shows and the upcoming wave of new productions.
The end of the year is a natural time for reflection, and critics are no exception. The Bridges of Madison County – Raven Players – Despite initial reservations about the genre,this production impressed. The two leads transcended the predictable script and songs,delivering outstanding performances. BV

Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus – Left Edge Theatre – An absolutely outrageous theatrical experience, bold in every sense. HD

Othello – Jacobethan Theatre Workshop – towering performances and minimalist outdoor staging combined for a compelling and authentic Shakespearean experience.HD
The Pirates of Penzance – 6th Street Playhouse – Charming performances, vibrant stagecraft, and a top-notch orchestra brought the gilbert & Sullivan classic to life with energy and flair. HD
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui – Mercury Theater – An astounding and unforgettable lead performance anchored this cautionary tale by Bertolt Brecht.CSM
Revenge of the Rebobs! – Lucky Penny – As a horror writer, I relish campy cryptid horror, and I was thrilled to see the elusive Rebobs take the stage.More horror plays, with or without the camp, please! BV
Ride the Cyclone – SRJC Theatre Arts – An absolute showcase for the talented young artists involved in all aspects of this production, funded by local taxpayers. HD
