Tucumán Health System Achieves Major Quality and Safety Certifications

A significant push for enhanced patient care has resulted in widespread quality and safety certifications across hospitals and healthcare services in the Province of Tucumán, Argentina. The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Luis Medina Ruiz, and supported by Governor Osvaldo Jaldo, recognizes the dedication of local healthcare providers to meeting rigorous national and international standards.

The recent awards, presented at the Centro de Salud hospital, acknowledge the efforts of six tertiary hospitals, numerous services, and administrative areas in achieving ISO quality standards and other key certifications. This commitment to quality is particularly noteworthy given the high volume of patient care provided – exceeding 500,000 consultations annually, encompassing both scheduled and emergency services.

“Today with great pride in the Health System of the Province of Tucumán, we have delivered certificates and diplomas for certification in safety and quality of patient care,” stated a senior official during the ceremony. “These are evaluations voluntarily self-imposed, where they undergo external examinations with national and international certifiers and receive this recognition.”

Voluntary Standards Drive System-Wide Improvement

The certifications are not mandated, but rather represent a proactive step by healthcare facilities to demonstrate their commitment to best practices. These facilities undergo thorough external evaluations by both national and international certifying bodies. According to reports, many providers in Tucumán currently hold certifications or are actively pursuing them, reflecting a growing culture of continuous improvement.

This emphasis on quality aligns directly with Governor Jaldo’s vision for accessible, high-quality healthcare for the community. As one official explained, the governor consistently emphasizes the need to “work close to the community and provide the best quality of service possible.”

Expanding Certifications Beyond Clinical Care

The scope of the certifications extends beyond traditional clinical settings. The General Director of Health Supervision, Dr. Veronica Coccioli, highlighted the achievements of various departments, including the Human Resources Directorate, the General Directorate of Inspection, and the Disability Board, in obtaining ISO certifications.

“This is very important, especially the presence of our minister, supporting this as a strategic line,” Dr. Coccioli noted. “We talk about quality and patient safety and we talk about healthcare and non-care establishments that have certified in international standards, have been accredited in international standards such as ITAES and have managed to certify a self-assessment tool at the national level.”

The implementation of these management systems is expected to foster lasting changes in organizational cultures, promoting a focus on process improvement and patient-centered care. Local Hospital Celebrates Progress, Sets Future Goals

The director of the Health Center Hospital, Dr. Karina Lotto, expressed pride in her hospital’s achievements, noting that they had certified processes in otorhinolaryngology and received a national-level distinction for overall quality processes.

“A great end to the year where we are placing emphasis on the quality and safety of care for our patients,” Dr. Lotto said. “It is a pride that motivates us to continue working to reach the advanced level next year.”

The ongoing commitment to quality and safety certifications signals a positive trajectory for the Tucumán health system, promising improved patient outcomes and a stronger, more resilient healthcare infrastructure for the province.
