A Celestial Masterpiece 6,000 Light-Years Away
The newly released image showcases NGC 6820, a vibrant cloud of gas and dust illuminated by the intense energy of nearby stars, alongside the glittering NGC 6823 star cluster. located approximately 6,000 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula, the scene offers a compelling glimpse into the dynamic processes of star formation and the lifecycle of nebulae.
The image reveals hot, massive stars within NGC 6823 appearing as brilliant specks of blue-white light, powerfully illuminating the surrounding red gas that constitutes NGC 6820.These stellar winds and radiation sculpt the gas and dust into dramatic pillars, mirroring the famous structures seen in the Eagle Nebula. Hawaiian Mythology Inspires a New Name
The image holds particular significance for the islands of Hawaii, home to the Gemini North telescope, which began operations in June 1999. The region of the sky containing NGC 6820 and NGC 6823 lies within the Summer Triangle – an asterism formed by the bright stars Deneb, Vega, and Altair – known locally as Mānaiakalani, the Great Fishhook of Maui.
In a unique collaboration, four local high school students participating in the University of Hawaii’s Project Hōkūlani summer internship bestowed a Hawaiian name upon the image: Ua ‘Ōhi’a Lani, meaning the Heavenly ‘Ōhi’a Rains. “This image is crimson and red like lava because of the abundance of hydrogen gas present in the nebula,” one of the Gemini interns explained in a statement, drawing a connection to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.
A Global Observatory with Twin Telescopes
the image was captured using the Gemini North telescope, situated on the summit of Maunakea, a shield volcano that hosts 13 major telescope observatories. Though, the International Gemini Observatory is comprised of twin 8-meter telescopes. Its counterpart, Gemini South, is located on cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes and achieved “first light” in November 2000. together, these telescopes provide astronomers with access to nearly the entire night sky.
The interns further elaborated on the significance of the name, connecting it to the Hawaiian legend of ‘Ōhi’a and Lehua. “Their story is about regrowth after tragedy and the act of new beginnings, which we felt was evocative of the cycle of stellar life, death, and rebirth,” one intern noted. Another added, “The baby blue stars in the image reminded us of rain and how, in the story of ‘Ōhi’a and Lehua, when you pick the lehua blossoms, it rains.”
