International Heinrich Schütz Prize Awarded to Renowned Music Society

A prestigious honor recognizing dedication to the preservation of Baroque music has been bestowed upon the International Heinrich-Schütz-Gesellschaft (ISG). The proclamation, made Tuesday by the Heinrich schütz Music Festival, celebrates the ISG’s tireless efforts in safeguarding and promoting the legacy of composer Heinrich Schütz (1585-1627).
Celebrating a Legacy of preservation
The International Heinrich Schütz Prize, an undated silver medal crafted by sculptor Anna Franziska Schwarzbach, will be presented to the ISG on October 3rd during the Heinrich Schütz Music Festival in Gera. This recognition underscores the society’s significant contributions to both the scholarly research and the vibrant performance practice of Schütz’s work.
Founded in 1930,the ISG’s origins are surprisingly unconventional – beginning as a new shooting company. However, the association quickly pivoted to focus on its namesake, establishing itself as one of the oldest music societies in Germany. Based in Kassel, the city where Schütz began his career, the ISG initially concentrated on the composer’s music and that of his contemporaries within the German-speaking world. Today,its influence extends globally,with active sections in Scandinavia,France,Japan,and North America.
“As an editor and organizer at the interface of science and lived music practice, the ISG works influential and sustainably,” a festival representative stated.
