The deal includes an opt-out clause after the first season, allowing Helsley to re-enter free agency following the 2026 season.
A Dominant Closer Joins the Orioles
Helsley brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success to a Baltimore team looking to improve its pitching staff. Over his seven-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career, he has amassed 105 saves, including a league-leading 49 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2024. This season, split between the Cardinals and the New York Mets, Helsley appeared in 58 games, posting a 3-4 record with 21 saves and a 4.50 ERA.
Opting for the Bullpen
Despite interest from several teams who viewed Helsley as a potential starting pitcher, the two-time All-Star (2022, 2024) ultimately chose to remain a relief pitcher. “Several clubs tried to recruit Helsley as a starting pitcher,” ESPN reported, “but the 31-year-old right-handed pitcher chose a relief pitcher.” He is expected to immediately step into the role of Baltimore’s closer, solidifying the back end of their bullpen.
