Yesterday evening, President Serzh Sargsyan participated in the solemn ceremony of honoring and awarding the ten best sportsmen of Armenia, the press service of the RA president informs.
At the traditional pre-holiday meeting, the President of the Republic congratulated all the representatives of the sports world on the New Year and Christmas holidays, wished them health, new successes and achievements in the field of sports and personal life.
Speaking about the 2016, full of sports events and successes. The President considered the 31st Summer Olympic Games to be the most important event for the sports world, where Armenia presented itself with dignity, bringing the Olympic gold to Armenia after a long break. Like that, the medals won in the 2016 world and European adult, youth and youth championships are, according to the President of the Republic, the result of years of hard work.
The president assured that the state will continue to increase the funds for sports every year.
“I am happy that every year in Armenia new gymnasiums, new sports schools are commissioned and, of course, it is very appreciable that this happens as a result of public-private cooperation as well. For example, the entire complex of the Olympic Committee was put into operation, just two or three days ago we put into operation the gymnasiums of Yerevan State University, luxurious, large, comfortable, meeting all modern requirements. In this way, I can continue the list of stadiums and sports schools put into operation. When our athletes, our wonderful athletes, in different places of the world, on different sports platforms, raise the tricolor of Armenia or sing our national anthem, it is natural that every Armenian, every citizen of the Republic of Armenia is filled with pride. But the important thing, I think, is also that they become symbols, and the younger generation, the children, start to follow them.
I confidently say that Armenia became a chess country because we had Tigran Petrosyan. Football in Armenia is developing, it is true that the championship is not going very well, but I am sure that football in Armenia has a great future, because the boys of “Ararat 73” are sitting here, who just instilled us with a sense of pride. I am sure that even yesterday’s goal of Henrikh Mkhitaryan inspired thousands of young people and children with pride. When Artur Aleksanyan became the champion in Rio, I think that all the Armenian boys thought: God forbid, they would become the Olympic champion themselves, so that they would receive such respect and such acceptance.
