jpnn.com – JAKARTA – French National Team coach Thierry Henry targets Les Blues to win Olympic football gold. Henry said he would do everything the team could to present a medal in front of the French public.
“My target of winning a gold medal might bother some people, however, that’s not arrogance or overconfidence. It’s just that, at some point we have to try to win it,” said Henry, quoted on the FIFA website, Friday.
“We don’t know where we will end up, but we will do everything we can to get that (gold) medal,” Henry said.
France, which has the status of host at the Olympics this time, is in group A along with the United States, New Zealand and one country slot from the Asian zone. The last time France celebrated football glory at the Olympics was in 1984 in Los Angeles.
Henry, who is also a former Arsenal player, revealed that as the host his team certainly had great pressure to end a long fast of 40 years.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm. Regarding pressure, of course there is because of what France has done in the last few years. So, the pressure has been there since representing this country,” said Henry.
“You owe it to yourself to represent the country well. It took time to reach the current situation,” he added.
However, Henry said that in Olympic history it was very rare for the home team to win an Olympic medal in front of its own fans. He is also optimistic that he will be able to create a new historical record together with France. (antara/jpnn)
