Hessen wants more hydrogen for energy supply

by time news

HEssen wants to rely more on the climate-friendly future technology of hydrogen in the energy supply. Hydrogen should play an important role, said the State Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Jens Deutschendorf, on Thursday in Frankfurt at the Hessian Fuel Cell Forum. “We need it as a storage medium for wind and solar power, we need it in certain industrial processes, and we need it in air traffic.”

However, hydrogen is not a patent solution for the energy transition. It is very expensive to manufacture and only climate-neutral if it is obtained from renewable energies. “We must therefore concentrate its application primarily on the areas for which there is no other, more efficient technology.”

The country’s hydrogen strategy

At the same time, renewable energies would have to be consistently expanded, said Deutschendorf. “As the location of Germany’s largest airport, we are of course particularly interested in making air traffic CO2-neutral.” Work will therefore continue on a pilot plant for synthetic fuel, which requires considerable amounts of hydrogen as a basis. There should be a state hydrogen office to coordinate and control the projects.

The Hessian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the state’s hydrogen strategy. “It comes late, but enables important decisions to be made,” said managing director Robert Lippmann. Hydrogen could be a key to achieving the long-term climate goals and contribute to the competitiveness of Hessen as a business location.
