The Nueva Aurora Luz Elena Arismendi Pediatric Gynecology and Obstetric Hospital (HGONA) continues to innovate in highly complex surgical procedures. A team of specialists performed the first fetoscopy surgery for coagulation of the anastomosis between the two fetuses.

María Belén Nieto, a specialist in fetal surgery, pointed out that “the procedure is performed in monochorionic twin pregnancies (a single placenta for the two babies). “In these cases, an imbalance can be generated in the passage of blood from one baby to the other, which can cause complications such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, which is a serious pathology that puts one or both of their lives at risk. two creatures.”

He added that this type of surgery consists of burning the communications between the two fetuses through a procedure called placental surgery by fetoscopy for coagulation of anastomosis. The surgical intervention is minimally invasive with a great impact on the protection of the lives of babies.

Pierina Array, 28 years old and with a twin pregnancy of 23 weeks of gestation, was the beneficiary. She expressed her gratitude to the team of professionals; “They gave me all the necessary care to guarantee my health and that of my little ones.” At the moment, all three are stable and under permanent control to verify their evolution.

To date, in this third level hospital, belonging to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), 4 intrauterine fetal surgeries have been performed.

The inter-institutional work, through the Comprehensive Public Health Network, has been of vital importance for the timely diagnosis and specialized treatment required by the patients, who arrive at the hospital from different provinces of the country, as it is the only reception for the management of fetal pathologies.
